Today Congressman Bobby Scott announced that he is endorsing Ramin Fatehi, Democrat for Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney, in the June 8, 2021, Democratic Primary.
Congressman Scott has served Virginians since 1978 and since 1993 has represented the Third Congressional District of Virginia, which includes much of the City of Norfolk.
“I am proud to endorse Ramin Fatehi to be the next Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney,” said Congressman Scott, “I endorse Ramin Fatehi because he is fair, compassionate and accountable. His actions speak louder than words. Ramin was fighting for criminal justice reform before it was popular. His work on decriminalizing marijuana and his advocacy for no cash bail are only a few examples of leadership in creating a more equitable criminal justice system in Norfolk. Ramin exemplifies the type of service our communities deserve from Norfolk’s next Commonwealth’s Attorney. Please join me in supporting Ramin Fatehi for Commonwealth’s Attorney.”
Congressman Scott has spent over four decades warning of the counterproductive effects of “war on drugs” and the “war on crime.” He was one of only three legislators in the General Assembly to vote for abolition of the death penalty in the 1980s. His opposition in Congress to the 1994 Crime Bill was prophetic. He has challenged our assumptions and our government to recognize mass incarceration for what it is, and for a long time he did it against the political current even in our own Party.
“No public servant in Virginia has more credibility on criminal justice reform than Congressman Scott,” said Fatehi, “I am deeply grateful to Congressman Scott for believing in me and for lending his deep, ironclad credibility to my mission for a safer and more equitable Norfolk.”
